Hello Plant Lovers!
Австралия
Добавлен 18 июл 2020
Hello plant lovers! A channel with basic orchid 'how to' and care videos for cold/cool/intermediate orchids that I grow here in Melbourne, Australia, without any equipment, greenhouses, grow lights etc. A passionate amateur lets say - I've made LOTS of mistakes, learnt a lot and had some good results so it's time to share what little I've figured out! Happy watching!

Bakerara Sea Snake 'Unforgettable'
Dendrobium victoriae-reginae
Gomesa radicans
Oncidium sotoanum

Yes Plant Lovers! Well...tah dah! Look what turned up on Ebay the next week! This one is QUITE a different proposition so join me in unboxing Laelia blumenscheinii and finding out ll about it...
Australian Dendrobiums: a winter check in!
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.2 дня назад
It's bleak mid winter here in Melbourne but there is a lot going on with my Australian dendrobiums! I have a mix of species and quite complex hybrids all of which means different plants will be doing something a little different at this time of year! I have some plants just thinking about producing flower spikes; some plants with new spikes clearly emerging; some plants with spikes about to ope...

This week Plant Lovers we're taking another look at my Laelia anceps variety labeled 'Rosey Tiger' and going through all my painful learnings about just what this orchids needs to thrive in my environment. How to grow Gomesa radicans: a small/miniature orchid & a fragrant beauty!
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.28 дней назад
This week Plant Lovers, an orchid that is more of a curiosity than a passion - Gomesa radicans! It's described as a miniature orchid; and though that's true of the flowers, I don't think the plant is THAT small!! Gomesa radicans is an easy to grow orchid that I have outside under cover all year that is well able to take my cold winter temperatures - who knew this coastal Brazilian would love Me...
Orchids I bring inside for winter...and those I leave out!
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Месяц назад
Since I began my channel, people have regularly asked about the seasonal swap I do; bringing tender plants inside for winter and taking them out again in summer. I wasn't sure quite how to make a video about this because carrying a pot inside doesn't make gripping viewing! But a viewer asked again last week, and as is it's winter I figured out a way to show you what I bring inside, why and wher...
How to handle winter dormant orchids!
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Месяц назад
We are DEEP into winter here in Melbourne and the cold weather has lead me to ponder all the various types of 'dormancy' my orchids go through and the slightly different care that each requires. So in this video I thought I'd review the orchids I have that go through some sort of dormancy from a hard one to more of a rest, and explain the whys and wherefores of what I'm doing. Depending upon yo...
Dendrobiums growing in the wild! Dendrobium crumenatum
Просмотров 6 тыс.Месяц назад
This week Plant Lovers, a little trip to Ubud in Bali where I was lucky enough to see Dendrobium crumenatum growing on just about every second tree! And on seeing just how this epiphyte is growing in the wild made me reconsider how I'm growing similar Dendrobiums in pot culture in Melbourne! So we'll look at footage I shot in Bali and then return to look at three of my species Dendrobiums and s...

Beautiful
Beautiful blooms Matthew. ❤🇯🇲
I am waiting for your “Duo de Citron”😍
Lincolnshire UK, just love your videos, 32c today, my Laelia anceps is about 4 to 5 months from blooming.
S. Africa here. Love watching your videos as were both in the same hemisphere which is super too. Thank you. Love that amazing oncidium.
Stick the sotoanum in warm sunshine then smell it. Or stick a mug of hot tea/coffee under the spike for a few minutes.
Regift the white phal if you don't want it!
Matthew thankyou sooooo much. I have a few terrific natives but only 1 flowering cymbidium and I just bought my first seedling. It is has a nee growth shoot like yours in the video and it's roots are potbound and very healthy. I can't wait to follow your directions and repot plus now I am going back to my local nursery to buy a few more😅. Cheers Cheryle
Brilliant video with a very knowledgeable guest. It's nice to know I'm following the basic deflasking rules in the same way as an expert like Michael but I also picked up a few tips from the video too. I've had my share of disasters especially when I did my first flask but I've come to believe total annihilation of a flask is the price we pay for the experience. Certainly didnt feel that way as my tiny plants were dying off though! Happily I've improved with each try and my latest deflasking has gone really well so far, first time with no losses so far, but they are only a month out of the flask. I'm hoping my luck continues.
Glad to hear! I killed everything my first flask too!! Thanks for watching!
my dendrobium nobiles leaves arrived really droopy and canes too seemed too watery
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. You have inspired me to do a similar thing here in Sydney, although targeted for small balconies. I have no water or electricity on my balcony, so no special equipment for me either.
Good luck! Many things will thrive!
Hi Mathew, I just bought 2 baskets of these yesterday, with 5-7 buds per basket! I’m very excited. Thank you for this video❤️ From CA, US.
Oh lucky you!!
Beautiful to see in the wild but too much work for only one day of bloom…I need something that will last a while for me to enjoy the fruits of my labor.
Hi Matthew thanks for your information. Can you please give the name of micro fungi. Song. I live in Qld I love your show

Good to know! Thanks for watching!
Such a little cutie and I can't wait to see her in bloom. Good luck with her!!
Thank you!
Looks more like scoria (red/black)rather than pumice (grey/white).
Thanks for watching!
Love your video and I’m in Love with Laelias 😊
Thanks for watching!
Refreshing to see an orchid grower who will show their losses. I've just declared 4 seedlings dead that have spent the last 6 months in my OICU (orchid intensive care unit) I was sick of worrying about them! You mentioned looking up your records to check on a plant, could you do a video, or a segment on how you keep your records. I do mine on a spreadsheet and a have laboriously entered each plant in my phone along with their numbers so I can do short notes when outside then update the spreadsheet my laptop. I've looked for an app to use on my phone but they are all for iphones and I use android.
It just has to be done! Thanks for watching!
There is a yellow true Laelia, Laelia aurea. While it is listed as intermediate to warm, it should be able to grow for you in Melbourne without any issues. The only problem is it isn't very common in cultivation.
Interesting! Thanks for watching!
❤️💙🩵 love your content
Thanks for watching!
Wow, amazing how big they get! So pretty, thanks for sharing 🌱🤗
Amazing Matthew! Are they in the ground or in containers?? Thanks for showing us these gems!
In pots.
Why does my Coelogyne cristata get unsightly large brown leaf tips? It flowers well but looks awful.
Could be getting too much sun....or too much cold....or too wet....many possibilities.
Just beautiful! How big is your outdoor growing space? It looks huge!!😮❤🤗💯🪴👍
Can Australian Dendrobium be found in the USA besides the kingianum and speciosum?
I presume so - but I’m in Australia so perhaps an American grower can answer you?
A year later...im growing a division in a orchid basket in long fiber moss as i type this it's putting up a couple of new growths...i think like oncidium types they like consistent moisture with good drainage...mine gets bright light under a thin shade cloth cover.... thanks Matt.
Thanks for watching!
Great chat as usual !
Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Just what the doctor ordered.
Excellent! Thanks for watching!
Hi Mathew😌🙌🇯🇵My dendrobiums are under 80% shadecloth on my balcony. We have temperatures up to 38℃ and very humid. I did leave kingianum out all winter with temperatures at night at -5/-8℃ Day temperature 5/10℃ and dry-sunny. I also have dendrobium speciosum x gracilicaule. That I didn't try outside in winter yet😬The kingianum did survive and got just a bit of wilting on some canes and didn't flower last year. It's growing well now with new canes. dendrobium nobiles can be left outside too with no problems. I've even seen them sitting in pots right next to snow that had fallen, and that nobile flowered well this year😄They can stand cold with plenty of daily sunshine and low humidity in winter which is about 30/40% I love your dendrobium hybrids especially that dendrobium jesmond sparkler😌💞
Interesting! Thanks for watching!
